Insurance Auto Body Repair Help San Diego

Caught between the adjuster, the shop, and a car you need back? We help San Diego drivers navigate claims, supplements, OEM part rights, and shop selection — without giving up the leverage you didn't know you had.

California Driver Rights

What insurers don't always tell you up front.

01

You choose the shop

Under California law, you select where your vehicle is repaired. Not your insurer.

02

Estimate disputes are normal

The first estimate is rarely the final number. Supplements happen during teardown.

03

OEM parts matter for safety

You can request OEM parts, especially for structural and safety components.

04

Diminished value applies

If you're not at fault, you may have a diminished-value claim — even after a "complete" repair.

05

Rental coverage is yours

If you carry rental coverage, you're entitled to use it during the full repair window.

06

You can dispute total-loss values

Initial offers are based on data the insurer chose. You can counter with comparable San Diego sales.

Supplements 101

Why the first estimate is almost never the final price.

Adjusters write estimates based on what they can see from a walk-around. They miss hidden damage almost every time — bent inner panels, broken brackets, sensors that need replacement, hidden structural deformation.

Once the shop tears the car down, they write a "supplement" requesting more parts and labor. A good shop handles supplements as a normal part of the workflow. The insurer almost always pays them, but the back-and-forth can delay your car.

AutoBody San Diego helps you understand what supplements should be requested, how to interpret the line items, and when to push back.

DRP vs Independent

Should you use the insurance "preferred" shop?

+

DRP shop: faster start

Direct Repair Program shops can usually start repairs without a separate insurer inspection.

-

DRP shop: insurer-aligned

The shop's volume contract is with the insurer. That can affect parts choices and supplement decisions.

+

Independent: customer-aligned

An independent shop works for you. Easier to push for OEM parts and proper repair.

-

Independent: slower start

You may need a separate adjuster inspection before work begins, adding a few days.

Common Questions

Insurance Auto Body Repair Help FAQ.

What does an insurance auto body repair estimate include?
Insurance-related repairs often begin with damage photos, claim information, and an initial estimate. The estimate may cover visible damage only — if additional damage is found later during teardown, the repair process may require further documentation through a supplement.
What is a supplement on an auto body claim?
A supplement is a follow-up estimate requesting additional parts or labor after the shop tears the vehicle down and finds damage the original estimate missed. This is normal. Most insurers pay supplements, but the back-and-forth can delay your repair.
Can I request OEM parts on an insurance repair?
You can ask. OEM parts (original equipment from the vehicle manufacturer) fit better and last longer than most aftermarket alternatives, especially for structural and safety parts. Some policies cover OEM by default, some do not — review your policy or ask before approving the estimate.
What is diminished value and do I qualify?
Diminished value is the drop in your vehicle's resale value caused by being in a documented accident — even after a complete repair. If you were not at fault, California allows you to claim diminished value against the at-fault party's insurance. The amount depends on the vehicle's age, value, and damage history.
How long do insurance auto body repairs take in San Diego?
Depends on the damage scope, parts availability, and how quickly the insurer approves supplements. Light claims run one to two weeks. Larger claims with structural work and parts on order run four to eight weeks. We give realistic windows up front.
Can I dispute a total-loss valuation?
Yes. The first total-loss valuation is rarely final. You can counter with comparable San Diego market data (similar year, make, model, mileage, condition). Many drivers raise their settlement by negotiating with real comparable sales.
